Prague model trains

Thanks to this thread on airliners.net I found some interesting model railway related "sights" in Prague. One suggested accommodation was the Ibis Hotel Mala Strana. Close by is Railroad Kingdom. My Googling also found the Vytopna Restaurant in Prague where the drinks are served by model trains.

Not sure if Hamburg is on your proposed itinerary, but this is also impressive :)

Indeed the Prague model railway was inspired by the one in Hamburg according to their website. Hamburg is only an outside chance right now, but I'm trying to wangle a visit to somewhere in Germany!

Dresden is only a 2h train ride from Prague...

I was thinking of Cologne, which is close to Belgium - but my planning is currently an overnight train to Prague (departure options are Amsterdam or Zurich) and then fly from Prague to Paris. Have to get from London to the train departure point. Can go via Belgium and meet the train at Cologne, but this means a 10pm departure which is a bit late for a relaxing train ride. Oh well, some brilliant idea will come to me!

For some variety you could try the "Dutch Flyer" service, combining train and ferry, http://www.seat61.com/Netherlands.htm
Early start from London though. Join the night train in Amsterdam, or elsewhere en route (eg Rotterdam)...

Down the Oito Line

Riding the length of the Oito Line from Itoigawa to Shinjuku (well, Matsumoto, really, but you might as well go the whole way) has long been a dream of mine. It suddenly gained urgency when I read that the last length of it between Itoigawa to Minami-Otari would be closed once the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa and Toyama opens by next year. Now, as mentioned last time, B and Alex are among those that would much rather catch the very fast Shinkansen, but in the end she decided to follow me, despite the very early morning. We rode the Hokuetsu Express from Toyama to Itoigawa, completing a little more of that West Coast for me. Though the coastal stretch was short there were some nice views at times. I should like to see more of Itoigawa one day, explore its geology. But now we had to quickly cross over the platform bridge to catch our train to Minami-Otari. To my great delight it was a KiHa 120 railcar, my favourite. I felt a degree of sadness standing up at the front...

One night in Canberra

It's the April school holidays and we are too busy to have a break but need one because of that. And because it's the Easter weekend the options are limited, so we just drive down to Canberra for the night. No, this isn't our first trip for 2023. I wrote about Japan on another site .  I refuse to wake up early so we depart after 8.30 AM. There is not much to say about the drive except that the clouds seem so low and Lake George is very full. We stop at a rest area and at the lookout up the hill to take it all in. Everyone is hungry so we first stop in Dickson and then can't think of anything to eat, so I drive us to Civic, where we can't decide and end up eating at the Singaporean Killiney Kopitiam branch.  The Canberra Centre has nice shops. I dream of getting an iPad from the Apple Store, we buy a blanket and toothbrushes from Muji and wish that Lego wasn't so expensive. Nothing we can't get in Sydney, but then we rarely go out shopping in the city. It...
